چکیده

The asymmetrically forced, damped Duffing oscillator is introduced as a prototype model for analyzing the homoclinic tangle of symmetric dissipative systems with symmetry-breaking disturbances. Even a slight fixed asymmetry in the perturbation may cause a substantial change in the asymptotic behavior of the system, e.g., transitions from two-sided to one-sided strange attractors as the other parameters are varied. Moreover, slight asymmetries may cause substantial differences in the relative size of the basins of attraction of the two wells. These changes seem to be associated with homoclinic bifurcations. Numerical evidence indicates that strange attractors appear near curves corresponding to specific secondary homoclinic bifurcations. These curves are found using analytical perturbational tools. @S1063-651X~97!00804-0#

Symmetry Breaking Perturbations and Strange Attractors

Collision and Symmetry Breaking in the Transition to Strange Nonchaotic Attractors

Strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) can be created due to the collision of an invariant curve with itself. This novel “homoclinic” transition to SNAs occurs in quasiperiodically driven maps which derive from the discrete Schrödinger equation for a particle in a quasiperiodic potential. In the classical dynamics, there is a transition from torus attractors to SNAs, which, in the quantum system,...

Chaotic Symmetry Breaking and Dissipative Two-Field Dynamics

The dynamical symmetry breaking in a two-field model is studied by numerically solving the coupled effective field equations. These are dissipative equations of motion that can exhibit strong chaotic dynamics. By choosing very general model parameters leading to symmetry breaking along one of the field directions, the symmetry broken vacua make the role of transitory strange attractors and the ...

Catastrophic bifurcation from riddled to fractal basins.

Most existing works on riddling assume that the underlying dynamical system possesses an invariant subspace that usually results from a symmetry. In realistic applications of chaotic systems, however, there exists no perfect symmetry. The aim of this paper is to examine the consequences of symmetry-breaking on riddling. In particular, we consider smooth deterministic perturbations that destroy ...

Complexity in Hamiltonian-driven dissipative chaotic dynamical systems.

The existence of symmetry in chaotic dynamical systems often leads to one or several low-dimensional invariant subspaces in the phase space. We demonstrate that complex behaviors can arise when the dynamics in the invariant subspace is Hamiltonian but the full system is dissipative. In particular, an infinite number of distinct attractors can coexist. These attractors can be quasiperiodic, stra...
